چکیده

Importance Since the accidental introduction of yellow-legged hornet (Vespa velutina nigrithorax) in France 2004, there have been reports this insect unexpectedly projecting a liquid toward human face, but ocular morbidity associated with is unknown, to our knowledge. Objective To describe case series lesions after exposure projection emitted by hornet. Design, Setting, and Participants This was an analysis all cases (excluding stings eye) collected French poison control centers between January 1, December 31, 2019. Main Outcomes Measures Symptoms were evaluated, fluorescein eye stain test used. Results Twenty-nine recorded (24 male 5 female patients; median age, 40 [interquartile range, 11] years); first occurred 2009. Most (20 [80%]) occupational among professionals dealing nests (eg, firefighters, wasp exterminators). consistent conjunctivitis often resolved quickly decontamination, patients developed periorbital edema, 2 experienced radiating neuropathic pain, keratitis. Conclusions Relevance These findings suggest that into eyes presents new risk health, its precise nature remains be determined. Ocular had favorable outcome. For who deal these insects, adaptation usual protections designed for native hymenopterans may warranted.

Epidemiology of jellyfish stings reported to poison centers in Texas.

This study examined the relationship between selected factors and all human exposures involving jellyfish stings reported to Texas poison centers. Cases were obtained retrospectively from calls to poison centers in Texas and included all reported human exposures during 1998-2004 involving jellyfish stings. The distribution of cases was determined for a variety of demographic and clinical parame...

Medical consequences of the Asian black hornet (Vespa velutina) invasion in Southwestern France.

The presence of the Asian black hornet Vespa velutina in Southwestern France has been confirmed since 2005. The medical literature indicates that in comparison with other Asian hornets' species V. velutina is not a major health threat in Asia. A review of data from French Poison Control Centers showed only one envenomation clearly linked to V. velutina. The victim developed severe symptoms with...

Acute renal failure following multiple hornet stings

Hornet stings are medically important stings which can cause allergic manifestations and, in severe cases, may lead to the unusual complication of acute renal failure (ARF) and other systemic complications. ARF results from toxic or ischaemic acute tubular necrosis in a setting of haemolysis or rhabdomyolysis or both and acute allergic interstitial nephritis. Venom from hornet stings can also c...

Poison and alarm: the Asian hornet Vespa velutina uses sting venom volatiles as an alarm pheromone.

In colonial organisms, alarm pheromones can provide a key fitness advantage by enhancing colony defence and warning of danger. Learning which species use alarm pheromone and the key compounds involved therefore enhances our understanding of how this important signal has evolved. However, our knowledge of alarm pheromones is more limited in the social wasps and hornets compared with the social b...

Kratom exposures reported to Texas poison centers.

Kratom use is a growing problem in the United States. Kratom exposures reported to Texas poison centers between January 1998 and September 2013 were identified. No kratom exposures were reported from 1998 to 2008 and 14 exposures were reported from 2009 to September 2013. Eleven patients were male, and 11 patients were in their 20s. The kratom was ingested in 12 patients, inhaled in 1, and both...
